Cultural Host Training

Training will take place in Shgag̱wéi, traditional land of the Lḵoot Kwáan (Chilkoot Tlingit People). Jaime Bricker is an Alaska Native, more specifically, Alutiiq/Sugpiaq. Bricker is a Skagway Traditional Council member and lifelong resident of Skagway recently certified to teach content compiled by Alaska Travel Industry Association Cultural Enrichment Committee. Certified instructors must be Alaska Native, and training must be hosted by a federally recognized tribal government or Alaska Native Corporation. We will meet at Skagway Traditional Council's Building on 11th and Broadway.

The Alaska Native Cultural Host Seminar is a comprehensive training program designed to provide participants with an increased awareness and knowledge of the Indigenous People of Alaska. Content includes First People of Alaska by Region, Land Acknowledgements, Alaska Native Values, Importance of Storytelling, Song & Dance, Subsistence Living, Traditional foods, Alaska Native Languages, Games of Agility & Mobility, Celebrations by Season, Museums, Cultural Sites, and Traveler's Etiquette. In addition, we will cover information specific to Skagway History and the Skagway Traditional Council. This event is interactive and will include group activities, icebreakers, and opportunities to share stories and ask questions in a safe place.

Participation is limited to the first 25 registrants. Participants will receive a Cultural Host Certificate upon completion of this class. Register and pay here:

Cultural Host Training

The Alaska Native Cultural Host is a comprehensive training program designed to provide participants with an
increased awareness and knowledge of the Indigenous Peoples of Alaska. Workshop participants will learn and share information on the culture of the main Alaska Native groups.

This class will be the one of the first to follow and will be offered at a discount for this year only. The class will be taught by cultural host expert Rachael Moreno and will take approximately 3-4 hours.

This will be a hands-on introduction to melt and pour soap making where students will get to make their own soap bar set and create a realistic geode soap bar. Mental Health First Aid

Would you know what to do in a mental health crisis?

The Dahl Memorial Clinic and Skagway Traditional Council are presenting a four-day training on mental health first aid. This 8-hour course teaches participants how to give first aid to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis situation and/or who are in the early stages of a mental health disorder. Mental health problems covered include depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar, and substance use disorders. Crisis situations covered in the training include suicidal behaviors, panic attacks, acute psychotic behavior, and drug overdose.

When: Tuesday 10/8/2019-Friday 10/11/2019 from 6-8pm each night. *Dinner will be provided!*

Where: Skagway Traditional Council (11th & Broadway)

Cost: FREE!

Skagway Traditional Council will be hosting a realty & wills workshop presented by the Central Council Realty Department for tribal members to ask questions regarding their native allotment or to create a will.

Eligibility Restrictions:

  • Will be applying for Native Vets Allotment

  • Or will be an owner of restricted native trust land

To Make an Appointment:

  • Please arrive 5-10 minutes before your appointment time.

Beginning Chilkat Weaving Class: The Perfect Circle

Beginning Chilkat Weaving Class instructed by mentor teacher Lily Hope as originally taught by Jennie Thlunaut.

Come learn Jennie’s speedy finger-twining technique while shaping and executing a woven circle, the foundation of all other shapes in Chilkat weaving.

Prerequisite: Students must have some experience in twining either Ravenstail, Chilkat, Spruce Root, Cedar Bark, or other textile weavings/handwork.

Time/Date: Wednesday July 24 & Thursday July 25, 2019 from 5-8pm

Class Fee: $50 (Normally $170 - class fee covers mini travel “loom”, warp, weft yarns, and a tapestry needle.

Materials to Bring: Students are asked to bring scissors, a handkerchief, and a small 7-8” wide basket (or large purse/bag, cereal box, or roll of paper towels) to mount “loom” bar on.

Q&A Session

Are you an Alaska Native Vietnam era Veteran who served between August 5, 1964 and December 31, 1971 or a descendant of one?

The John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act (Public Law 116-9) passed on March 12, 2019. This act provided for Alaska Native Vietnam era veterans who served between 8/5/1964-12/31/1971 to receive a land allotment.

STC will be hosting a Q&A session with Desiree Duncan of the Central Council Realty Department to answer any questions that Veterans my have on 7/9/2019 at 1pm in the Tribal Hall (11th & Boradway).
