Training will take place in Shgag̱wéi, traditional land of the Lḵoot Kwáan (Chilkoot Tlingit People). Jaime Bricker is an Alaska Native, more specifically, Alutiiq/Sugpiaq. Bricker is a Skagway Traditional Council member and lifelong resident of Skagway recently certified to teach content compiled by Alaska Travel Industry Association Cultural Enrichment Committee. Certified instructors must be Alaska Native, and training must be hosted by a federally recognized tribal government or Alaska Native Corporation. We will meet at Skagway Traditional Council's Building on 11th and Broadway.
The Alaska Native Cultural Host Seminar is a comprehensive training program designed to provide participants with an increased awareness and knowledge of the Indigenous People of Alaska. Content includes First People of Alaska by Region, Land Acknowledgements, Alaska Native Values, Importance of Storytelling, Song & Dance, Subsistence Living, Traditional foods, Alaska Native Languages, Games of Agility & Mobility, Celebrations by Season, Museums, Cultural Sites, and Traveler's Etiquette. In addition, we will cover information specific to Skagway History and the Skagway Traditional Council. This event is interactive and will include group activities, icebreakers, and opportunities to share stories and ask questions in a safe place.
